About Uncle Sam and the Team
Uncle Sam is a symbol, but not of the U.S. government or anything to do with politics.

No, he’s more than that. He’s a symbol of this nation and its amazing people. Uncle Sam is synonymous with patriotism and support of the ideals of America. We’re talking about the ideals it was founded on like Service, Self-Determination, Freedom from Tyranny, and other core values that we’ve been willing to fight for in wars all over the world.

Read on for a short history of:

Meet Uncle Sam

Uncle Sam, who shares the same initials with the United States, was born sometime around the War of 1812. It’s almost as if he just appeared full grown from the patriotic fervor of a nation defending itself from an attack upon its own shores.

Truth be told, his actual origin is a bit of a mystery.

Despite the mystery, he has served to motivate Americans both home and deployed abroad to fight for America since the early nineteenth century.

Although Uncle Sam has appeared in numerous publications and advertisements over the years, none have been more popular than the recruiting poster created by James Montgomery Flagg during World War I.

Since then, that image has been the iconic symbol known as Uncle Sam, featuring white hair and a goatee, wearing a white top hat with white stars on a blue band, a blue tail coat, and red-and-white-striped trousers.
Liberty, South Carolina

It is fitting that Uncle Sam’s Letters are postmarked from a town called Liberty located in South Carolina, one of the original Thirteen Colonies to form the United States.

How exactly Liberty got its name has been a source of debate over the years, and there are no real historical accounts of why Liberty was given the name.

Liberty today sits on land that was once part of the Cherokee Indian hunting grounds. The first Englishmen to venture into the area were traders who often travelled up from Charles Town and Savannah to exchange guns, horses, cloth, and liquor with the Cherokee for animal skin and fur. American settlers did not start moving into the area in large numbers until the mid-1780s.

Liberty’s official recognition as a town came soon after the Charlotte to Atlanta rail line was completed in the early 1870s. Former Confederate General William Easley, a lawyer working for the railroad company, negotiated to have the tracks laid through the southern part of Pickens County. It is along these tracks that Liberty grew. It is that same active rail line that still runs through the middle of town.

The city was officially chartered on March 2, 1876.
